Analysis of Breezeblocks

      The music video is directed by Ellis Bahl, the song is by Alt-J. The music belongs to the Alternative genre.  Like any good thriller, Bahl’s finishing twist changes how we think about the whole video, but because the story is told in reverse, the twist works two ways. Depending on the direction in which this story is told or viewed, the audiences interpretation of the characters motivations, the climax and the resolution change completely. Alt-J’s version opens with a woman lying in a bath, dead and drowned by a breezeblock, but who is miraculously restored to life by a married man. Although they fight, he eventually chooses her over his wife, whom he locks up and walks out on. On the other hand, in forward motion, a husband discovers his wife locked up by a jealous girlfriend, whom he fights and eventually kills. In the end, Bahl purposefully leaves the narrative open to interpretation, but both Alt-J and Bahl seem to agree on the fact that love can be both literally and emotionally crushing.

This music video by Ellis Bahl inspired me a lot in making my opening of a film as it uses reverse

       chronology and slow motion in order to create suspense and also to create a surprising twist. From the first half of the film it would appear that the music video for "Breezeblocks" is a tragic story of domestic violence between a husband and wife, however as the music video progresses the view of the audience changes our opinion on the narrative changes from a story about domestic abuse to a story of a jealous ex-girlfriend who ties up a man's wife which leads to a fight. it is not clear what the actual story is, it is left open to interpretation. This also influenced me as I don't think that my film should have a clear narrative, I would rather leave it open to interpretation as it allows the audience to create their own ideas about the film and to form their own personal opinions anout how thet feel about it.

THE KITCHEN

The walls of the kitchen are sage, the kitchen has a stone tiled floor with wooden work surfaces.

THE KITCHEN FLOOR

Francesca’s motionless body is lying dead on the floor in a pool of what appears to be blood. Small shards of glass can be seen on the floor surrounding her. As the sequence progresses the pool of blood starts to become smaller and mover closer to Francesca. The shards of glass on the floor surrounding Francesca start to move closer to her right hand. The shards of glass form together as a wine glass. It is at this point that it becomes obvious that the sequence is in reverse. The pool of blood goes into the glass which suggests that it was actually wine. The glass of wine moves up from the ground into the air slightly. As the wine glass moves further up in the air, movement can be seen in Francesca’s body. Francesca’s eyes suddenly open. Francesca’s body starts to move slowly up in the air. She falls onto her back in reverse. The wine glass returns to Francesca’s hand. Francesca stands up and pours wine into her glass in reverse. Francesca walks into the room in reverse.

The title of the film (Title) appears on the screen in bold. The font of the title is Baskerville Old Face.
